What is Wordia?
Wordia is a free games-based learning platform that blends word-based learning games, with interactive video vocabulary - helping students explore keywords and meaning in a fun new way.
Our goal is to build the world's best vocabulary resource for every subject teacher, and every student.
Why would I build a learning game?
We know students love games - and that they need to learn subject vocabulary and meaning as they progress through school. Wordia supports educators in this process, and help students to learn, through games-based learning.
Wordia builds fun, educational quick starter and plenary games that are focused in four key areas of Oracy, Grammar, Spelling and Visual Recognition.
How do I get started?
It's free to play - and build - any learning game within Wordia.
As an educator, you will get more benefits if you log in and create a free account - such as your own private school area, the ability to import your pupil class lists and to track and monitor student progress etc.
To register, please sign up at the top right of the page, and follow the instructions.
As a student, we give you a free account - your own private Word Bank where you can keep track your scores on a global leader board, and challenge friends from your own school or at other schools near you! (Coming soon!)
To register, please sign up at the top right of the page, and follow the instructions.
How long does it take to build a game?
We know educators are busy people!
It takes just a few minutes to add your vocabulary list to Wordia and to create a game for your class - and then a little longer to register a free account.
Once you have signed in, we provide you with a quick and easy way for you to upload your student class list - inviting your students to play your learning game.
How do I import my class list into Wordia?
Wordia allows you to add / import your student class list quickly and easily, so they can play the learning games that you’ve built. It only takes less than a few minutes:
Register or log in, then click on ‘My Wordia’ (top right of the screen). This brings up your dashboard area.
Click on ‘My Students’, and you’ll see ‘Add New Class’. This allows you to import a class spreadsheet, and populate your private school area.
What are Play Codes?
When you add subject vocabulary to Wordia, the created game is published within your own private school area. A Play Code allows you to share this with your class.
How does video fit into a games-based learning website?
When a student plays a learning game, Wordia records the student’s progress, and the words they encountered. To help reinforce this learning experience, Wordia matches these words against video definitions (with world experts and pupils) to help them learn and master the definition.
How do I upload a video?
First, make a video using any video recording device (web cam, mobile/ cell phone, video camera).
Once you have the video file, you will need to upload it to Wordia. This requires that you Sign Up or Log In (using the buttons in the top right). From here you can go to the videos page and click 'Upload a Video'.
You will need to associate the video with a word from the dictionary, so type this into the second dialog box, and follow the prompts. Your video is now live.
Wordia provides the tools for you to Manage (Delete) your video, after moderation and safety checks.
Is Wordia safe to use in my class to teach subject vocabulary?
Wordia is a safe and moderated learning environment - a fun destination where you can discover what words mean, and what they mean to people. We 'watch-list' sensitive words and their interpretations, and moderate all video.
Competition & Judging
Wordia runs a daily competition! Each day we send a set of t-shirts to a school that has created a game – and the game that has the most usage that day (plays from your students, their class friends and the Wordia community in general), wins a set of three t-shirts!
(Uniquely, Wordia t-shirts feature your school logo/crest/mascot, and the student avatar!)
We’ll contact you to let you know that you’ve won and what’s more, we’ll feature your game on the Home page!
