Gay Africa
GAY AFRICA brings together an exciting mix of artists and activists from Africa and the Caribbean. It is an evening of provocative performance and passionate debate.
Poetry Week
Arguably, one of the best poets of all time is Robert Burns and we celebrate the great man this week, launching Poetry Week today on Burns Day. During Poetry Week we will hear some fantastic original poetry by some of today’s leading poets, as well as some of the organisers of Britain’s greatest poetry societies and clubs.
Blogging Nation Week
With the power of the internet modern communication has been harnessed on a global level like never before. Blogging on the net has now become the speakers’ corner for a new generation and gives individuals the chance to make a difference and spread their weird and wonderful messages. The Wordia team have joined forces with the Committee to Protect Bloggers to celebrate their achievements and to bring you a selection of great words throughout the week.
New Year Week
The twelfth month is nearly over and it is time to look back fondly on the noughties, and also a time to look forward to the next decade. So, with this in mind we have assembled some great videos with a New Year theme; Happy New Year everyone!
Christmas Week
The festive season is upon us and it’s time to be merry. With that in mind, we’ve got together with some of the bright faces of comedy to supply this week’s lovingly-crafted videos. So sit back, get a mince pie - perhaps a drop of sherry - and enjoy.

Faith is the confident belief or trust in the truth or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing. For Faith Week we have spoken to some of the most prolific authors in this area to get their explorations of some great words surrounding this subject.
St. Andrew's Week
Saint Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland, and St. Andrew’s Day is celebrated by Scots around the world on the 30th November. The Wordia team has been all over the UK to get some great words defined for this great celebration.
Belief Week
Belief is a fascinating concept; from the atheist to the most devoted church-goer, almost everyone has a belief of one sort or another. For Belief Week we have spoken to some of the most prolific authors in this area to get their explorations of some great words surrounding this subject.
Global Entrepreneurship Week
From 16 – 22 November we’ll be celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week with the British Library Business & IP Centre. The Centre supports entrepreneurs and inventors from that first spark of an idea, to successfully launching a business. During the week, the Library’s running a jam-packed programme of events and activities to get everyone going in business.
Remembrance Week
November is the time of the year when we wear a red poppy in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for us during wartime. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One. We will be exploring the meanings of some great words this week that represent the feeling of remembrance.
Legal Week
Law and justice is the backbone of our society and also holds a fascinating plethora of words. So, in order to celebrate the great institution of law, we are going to cover legal terminology as part of this week’s theme.
Open University Week
We, the Wordia team, have got a yearning for learning, therefore we thought it only appropriate to team up with good people at The Open University. The Open University provides high-quality university education to anyone who wants to further their education and provides a wide variety of courses.
Flash Fiction
At Wordia we are always trying to promote words and language; after all, where would we be without it? This week we have teamed up with the folks from eastoftheweb.com to bring you a week dedicated to short stories and the joys of writing, better known as flash fiction. This is a glorious world that we live in and we need to preserve it for future generations. Dr. Johnson Week
September 18th 2009 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Samuel Johnson, who created the first ‘Dictionary of the English Language’, published in 1755 and described as “one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship”. We’re taking this week to reflect upon his great legacy, and what it means for the English language.

Words of Henry VIII
2009 marks the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s accession to the throne. Historic Royal Palaces will be dedicating the whole year to marking the lasting legacy of the mighty monarch with permanent representations, temporary exhibitions and thought-provoking debate. Henry’s most famous royal residence, Hampton Court Palace, has been once again transformed into a living Tudor world for “Henry VIII: heads and hearts” and upriver at the Tower of London we are hosting the major multi-media exhibition “Henry VIII: dressed to kill” - the largest collection of Henry VIII’s personal arms and armour ever to be held in the UK.

Reboot Britain takes a totally different look at the challenges we face as a country and the new possibilities that – uniquely - this generation has to overcome them. British Tennis Week
Throughout the week, seven leading figures from various areas of British Tennis are using their experiences to define words that are important to them. The purpose is to create a community of people talking about tennis – what the game means to them and how it affects their life.
Refugee Week 2009
The Simple Acts campaign is about inspiring individuals to use small, everyday actions to change perceptions of refugees.
It consists of 20 actions that can be done by anyone and that encourage us to learn and do more with refugees. With every person who joins the campaign and does a small thing with and for refugees, we get a little closer to removing barriers between communities and to creating the kind of world we all want to live in.
